YOGA PHILOSOPHY WITH LYNDSEY BISHOP

These sessions will take you beyond the mat and the physical aspects of the yoga practice and into a deeper understanding of the long history of yoga and its rich Eastern roots. We will explore some of the key texts that belong to the wisdom tradition of yoga, as passed down from the ancient sages and rishis and contemplate how these revelations can be applied to living a mindful and purposeful life.

As part of this module we will also explore the subtle yoga body, with integral practices that will enable you to fully integrate the fulsome body, breath and mind experience, including:

Mediation: You might be surprised to know that the original purpose of physical yoga was to move energy and prepare the body for stillness. This place of stillness and presence is known as meditation. In this training you will learn some simple and effective techniques to bring you into a more calm, clear and connected state of being. Stillness is a super-power that once cultivated enables you to show-up more present and available for yourself and all those around you.

Pranayama: In Sanskrit (the sacred language of yoga), “prana” means life energy and “yama” means control. We will explore breathing techniques that help balance the energy channels of the body and help promote vitality in the system. You will also learn how pranayama helps bridge the body-mind connection and supports your meditation practice.

Chanting (sound healing): Sanskrit, the sacred language of yoga is a vibrational language that opens-up the more subtle channels of the body. We will learn to chant some of the key verses from the primary yoga texts and explore how this method is an integral part of your yoga meditation toolbox.

    IAM YOGA LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which IAM YOGA operates, at Yonge and Bloor, was for many millennia the traditional home of the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Haudenosaunee, and the Huran-wendat (Wyandot). Today, this land is still the home of many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to connect with our bodies, minds, and spirits through the sacred practice of yoga on this equally sacred territory, and we encourage the reflection of the profound relationship Indigenous peoples maintain with it.
IAM YOGA also acknowledges the role imperialism, colonialism, and systemic racism have played in the cultural genocide of Indigenous peoples.
Lastly, we respect and honour their caretaking of this Earth; their indispensable knowledge is of the utmost importance in the race against climate change.
