Interview: Jonny Belinko

Interview: Jonny Belinko

Jonny is the preeminent Ashtanga teacher at Iam Yoga, where he has been teaching for several years. Jonny first started practicing yoga because of a New Year’s Resolution in 2004. He took to it right away; by that summer, he moved to Taipei to teach full time, where he spent almost a full year. While in Taipei, he was exposed to Ashtanga. “Ashtanga made sense to me,” Jonny says. “It was like a prescription. It was a formula that was easy to follow that I didn’t need to think about.”

Can you tell me about something you learned that changed your practice in a significant way?

My practice changed a lot when I learned to just show up and do it without being so intent on a specific result. Instead, I’ve found it’s about going as far as you can go – it’s always going to feel a little challenging and a little uncomfortable, but the key is to keep the discomfort manageable.  When you can have manageable challenge and you can keep your breath calm and steady in that place, that’s where the real medicine is – and that’s where I see the magic in Ashtanga.

What one word would you use to describe yourself?

I’d like to think “open-minded”. Does that count as one word?

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Always being able to connect to the good and the beautiful in everyday life.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my work towards having an enjoyable, creative and meaningful life experience.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I see myself doing better at having an enjoyable, creative and meaningful life experience.
