HERE’S A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW IF IT’S YOUR FIRST TIME AT IAM YOGA!

What to bring: Clothes fit for movement, extra change of clothes if you plan on sweating, your own water bottle (we don’t have water for purchase) and your yoga mat! We do have mats and shower towels for rent if necessary.

What to know: IAM Yoga is a welcoming community and you will feel right at home, fast! We do kindly ask that you arrive on time and leave your cellphone and personal belongings outside in a locker. Our practice rooms are a quiet space so we ask for conversations to stay in common areas.

Focus on your breath. Movement of any style can be challenging, especially when its new. Our best advice is to always take your time and come back to your breath when you need a moment. The more your practice; the more comfortable these movements will be with time.

Be kind to yourself. Yoga is not a competition and everyones practice looks different. Each class will bring up unique experiences for you, do your best to pay attention to how your body feels in the moment and try not to risk injury. Keep yourself safe and take your time, mention any issues you may be experiencing with your instructor so they can suggest modifications.

Adjusting to the heat! Stay hydrated! Before, during and after a hot class. Take the time you need to adjust, even if that means laying down and letting your body adjust; it’s easy to feel faint if you haven’t eaten or drank enough in a day. The temperature gets more comfortable as you continue taking hot classes.

Ask questions! The members of our teaching staff are incredibly knowledgeable about diverse aspects of yoga and exercise, and they are happy to share that knowledge with you. Ask away before or after class if you have any questions.

    IAM YOGA LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

    The land on which IAM YOGA operates, at Yonge and Bloor, was for many millennia the traditional home of the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Haudenosaunee, and the Huran-wendat (Wyandot). Today, this land is still the home of many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to connect with our bodies, minds, and spirits through the sacred practice of yoga on this equally sacred territory, and we encourage the reflection of the profound relationship Indigenous peoples maintain with it.
    IAM YOGA also acknowledges the role imperialism, colonialism, and systemic racism have played in the cultural genocide of Indigenous peoples. Lastly, we respect and honour their caretaking of this Earth; their indispensable knowledge is of the utmost importance in the race against climate change.
